Hearing bad news about someone you know always results is an emotional response because of that connection, and its made worse when the subject of the news is something you really care about. The report yesterday of Sam Allardyce the then England Manager was a shock to me, firstly because I know him and also one of the other people in the meeting with him, but more importantly because I had faith in him to life the England football team to a higher level and to get performances out of them that others have failed to do.
This morning I am angry, disappointed and frustrated by the news of his departure, not as much because he said some stupid things when he should have known that he would be a target of the media, but because this meeting was a result of greed and a hunger for even more money. As England Manager, he was apparently earning over £3M per year, and his job was to manage the England team. Does he really need the extra money, the simple answer is ‘no’ and he should have not been at that meeting, and even having agreed to attend, someone should have done some investigation about the people he was due to meet.
Football is a rich game these days, but the people who keep it alive are the everyday fans who aren’t in the same income league as managers and players. Earn respect of the fans on the pitch and then maintain it by not doing something as na?ve and immature as this. On one hand I feel sorry for Sam because he was set up for the fall, had bad advisors around him, but on the other hand I am really angry that he threw away his golden opportunity to shine for the promise of money. A sad day for English football and English football fans.
